Photographers can add great commentary in describing the subject of the shot. If the subject lacks animation or is shy in front of the camera, the location can be something that allows the subject to "hide" from the camera. The location becomes the personality of the subject therefore the subject has less of a role than in a situation where there is nothing else in the frame to distract the viewer's eye. It also then becomes an interpretive portrait - one that offers a view into another person's life.
